Supportive Community for Active and Retired Workers
Commentary By Theara Washington
Second quarter of the 2023 calendar year, I found myself taking pause. Taking pause is a transitory action yet vital for renewal and restoration. Doing this for the month of April is essential for me.
Allowing moments for introspection (meditating and affirming) and remembrance of my intention is what taking pause means for me. This helps to keep the reasons why I even bother doing what I do in the forefront. And it helps keep me focused. With renewed determination I can continue forward energized with refreshed enthusiasm.
When handling my business it can be overwhelming to attempt to eat the proverbial elephant. Even more ridiculous to think something so big can be done as one meal.
Remembering to take life a day at a time, in small bites and possibly having to take a doggy bag (for certain situations) is something I have to continuously remind myself. And guess what? That’s okay!

A relative reminded me of how we can claim amazing things for our life. More immediate we can claim remarkable things in our daily lives.
When I claim things in my life, I am asserting reaching each goal with due diligence. We claim the goals and then work toward these ideals. Conceiving, believing and taking steps to achieving a goal is the process.
Setting a variety of goals are important to me. My goals for the day are basically my ‘To-Do List.’ I accept from the onset that some objectives are achievable this day and others will take time.
With each success, confidence, knowing myself, trusting my decisions and setting of more goals develop. I become better at the whole setting of and, making it all happen. (Remember you are allowed to make mistakes along the way.)
If you have made any kind of health resolutions in January, and are not perfect at keeping it, or even gave in already, then let me be your cheerleader, Get back on track, you CAN do this!!!

This year my mental health is priority. So I am taking advantage of the New Year magic and riding the wave. For me January is the month symbolizing revitalization. That restart momentum, like a wave, will carry me at its highest giving me a glorious push to reaching my goals! All the best of health to us ALL in 2023!!!
I am a black woman having meaning and purpose. It matters to me to say that out loud. Despite regularly being reminded of my race and gender especially when I am out shopping, doctor’s appointment, entertainment and etcetera, I believe focusing on me and remaining radiant is most essential.
Sometimes I am treated as a negative stereotype, a stigma. If you do not know me, then why do you think it is ok to pass judgement on me? Why do you think it is ok to treat me badly? It is simply NOT ok.
I cannot answer for how you behave towards me. I can and do have a responsibility to myself. That responsibility is to take good care of me and my mental health.
With that said, and despite what you may think of me, through my experiences I mantra and positively affirm that ‘I am a human being deserving of respect and dignity.’ And I command it by presenting myself as worthy.

As a worker, at the very least, we deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Transparency regarding worker treatment, wages and career path within an organization is paramount to not only our health and well-being, also to the health and well-being of the organization.
As a human it is important for us to protect our mental, physical and emotional health. Connecting with other workers help to establish a community. Having community gives us the space to create, innovate and motivate in a meaningful way. Sharing our experiences and connecting with others helps encourage voice. These times need for us not to be silenced. Why do we have voice? If not to use it and to be heard, then what?. Connecting helps us to know that we are not alone. It helps to validate our concerns. Connecting can gives us the support we need to take action.

Healthy or unhealthy relationships with an employer and employees effects your health.
Commentary By Theara Washington
In my work experience there were red flags, signs that an organization has an unhealthy relationship with its workers. Whether toxic environments exist with intention or unintentional, there ought to be zero tolerance initiated by organization leadership. Top down leadership helps to insure equity amongst the workers in deed as well as in word. Anything less is remiss on behalf of executive management.
These three are sure indicators of a toxic work environment:
• When peer disrespect or bullying is allowed especially for the sake of clout.
• When something unfair occurs amongst the workers and no one speaks up or questions it.
• When supervision or management simply does not thank you and or give you credit for a job well done, or for going above and beyond.
